Passionate Conservation Storyteller
I believe in the power of stories! I believe they help us make sense of the world, they inspire us, and they connect us to the world around us and the collective work we all need to do to conserve our beautiful planet. But a story only works if it is shared – and I believe the CEC is an amazing network of communication and conservation professionals uniquely positioned to both tell stories and share approaches to make communications programs truly work. For all of our work to succeed, we need partners and friends. Being part of the CEC community and allows us to connect to a wide range of potential partners and friends, and to stay abreast of what is really working, and why. If you are not a member – do become one!
Conservation is about people and nature together and, for people, a powerful story can make help make this relationship healthier and stronger. We all define the world through stories and each of us, with programs tailored to our own challenges and contexts, can use many types of media to connect to our audiences in a much more visceral way. You can take on almost everything through stories because all of us are hard-wired to really feel stories, and respond to them.
I am deeply committed to community empowerment and using creative media to facilitate powerful social change. For over 25 years I have been in the conservation and development field. I have spent the last five years leading PCI Media Impact’s growing portfolio of Entertainment-Education programs that now spans over 35 countries. I believe my multi-sector background (twelve years with the United Nations Development Programme, five years with the Canadian government and three years working with other international non-government organizations such as ICLEI and Rare) have helped me realize that we need to work together for conservation. Partnerships simply work better!
I am a dual Canadian and South African citizen and have lived, worked and travelled in over 80 countries. Ironically, while I hold a Masters of Science from the London School of Economics and Bachelors in Economics from the University of British Columbia, I have ended up making soap operas and songs for a living.
PCI Media Impact’s storytelling and media approach is a perfect bridge between two worlds, uniting community-generated popular entertainment and critical biodiversity research and implementation. From the Caribbean to Laos and across Africa, PCI Media Impact is sharing stories on empowerment, climate change and biodiversity conservation for a more sustainable planet.
Compelling media products like the radio drama-inspired play Guardians of the Mist reinvent the notion of community participation. The enchanting production with our Mexican partners from the Fondo de Conservación El Triunfo and The Nature Conservancy uses storytelling to drive empathy to educate young people on biodiversity. The show follows the heroic efforts of an animal kingdom protecting itself from the threat of habitat destruction.
